This page lists all possible endings of Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea.

Bad Endings

Bad Ending 1 - "Sea Monster"

This ending is achieved if Wadanohara chooses to run away when encountering Idate after he has beaten Samekichi.

Bad Ending 2 - "Betrayal"

When in Sea God Castle, if Wadanohara chooses to follow Samekichi when he is dragged away by Syakesan, Fukami becomes corrupted and kills Memoca, Dolpi, and Wadanohara. Fukami is later horrified by what he has done, though Syakesan encouragingly teases him there is nothing to be ashamed about, saying Fukami is just like the rest of the Red Sea inhabitants. Syakesan then welcomes Fukami to the Sea of Death. It has been said by Deep-Sea Prisoner to be the worst possible ending. [1]

Normal Endings

Normal Ending 1 - "The Red Sea Witch"

Should Wadanohara choose to trust Syakesan, he assaults her in front of Samekichi. Samekichi passes out, and upon awakening asks Syakesan what has happened to Wadanohara. On the surface of the sea, she can be seen now clothed in red. Wadanohara has become corrupted and joined the Sea of Death.

During a livestream, it was revealed almost all of the Blue Sea inhabitants were indeed killed. Their slaughtered bodies were piled in the Old Sea and left there untouched. The way they died was unspeakably terrible. Some of them may not even be in their original form due to the bitterness and hatred of the Red Sea. Wadanohara just watched from the sidelines. The last survivor besides Samekichi was Fukami, who was decapitated by her. In particular, the way Memoca, Dolpi, and Fukami died bear a striking resemblance to the nightmares Wadanohara had in-game. [2]

Chlomaki was not a target of their attack because she was not from the Blue Sea. Due to this, Lobco escaped with her; Lobco is easily forgotten by everyone, which may have contributed to saving her life. In this ending, Lobco is depressed because she lost her family and friends. When kidnapped by Roc Hijoushiki, she does not resist him and does not try to run away, because she lost her home and has nowhere to return to. She becomes dependent on Roc who is kind to her, and their romantic relationship has an unhealthy codependency. During this, Roc will sometimes comfort and pet Lobco when she cries. [3] Lobco has rarefied thoughts and may try to commit suicide. Roc will stop her and comfort her. He will at first take her to bed as he pleases but gradually will come to know her situation and coddle her. [4] (The Japanese word "慰める" (comfort) can mean the act of healing someone's grief or to "play" with someone as they please. [4]) Roc has an obsession or possessiveness towards Lobco because he thinks she is his. [4] The aquarium that Lobco is kept is always clear sometimes causing her to dream about the Blue Sea. She wakes up severely distraught. [5] Lobco thanks Roc for the aquarium, though her eyes are empty. She asks Roc for pleasure to help her forget all that she has been through. [5]

Idate also survived precisely because he is from another region. [2]

In this ending, Samekichi is used to vent the desires of the Sea of Death denizens. A shadow and sound effects seen in an illustration also show his new fate. [6] Whether Syakesan used Samekichi to "vent his frustrations" is up to the viewer's imagination. [7] Wadanohara will heal Samekichi's injuries and restore his ripped off limbs. [7] Syakesan is still jealous of Samekichi. When he sees Wadanohara with him, he becomes very upset. [7]

During this ending, Syakesan watched Shisatsu die. Deep-Sea Prisoner commented, "I wonder what was going through his head at that moment." [8]

Normal Ending 2 - "The Blue Sea Witch"

If Wadanohara does not trust Syakesan, she sacrifices her life in order to restore peace to the Blue Sea in similar fashion as her father Meikai. The aftereffects of her sacrifice can be seen in the other character's reactions to her disappearance. Samekichi is noticeably devastated, commenting, "..... What point is this sea if you're not in it?"

Deep-Sea Prisoner considers The Blue Sea Witch ending the worst. Syakesan and the rest of the Sea of Death inhabitants get sealed in the Cast Pearl by Wadanohara similarly to how Meikai did in the past. Samekichi takes his own life, unable to bear the loss, on the rock he first met her. [9]

True Ending

The True Ending can be achieved by going through the first two Normal Endings in order. Syakesan stabs Wadanohara with the Sacred Sword. Samekichi chooses to go after his brother to put a stop to this. Before doing so, Wadanohara regains more of her sealed memories, realizing how deeply Samekichi cares for her. She promises to wait for him until his return. At the end of the game, the older Wadanohara who has been telling the story awaits his return yet again. On this night, Samekichi finally makes it home, and the two are finally reunited.

While developing the moment where Samekichi and Wadanohara reunite during the True Ending, Deep-Sea Prisoner was thinking last minute as to whether she should make it clear that Samekichi had survived going to the Sea of Death or leave it to the player's imagination. In the end, she was glad she chose the former option as she said it was easier to depict characters such as grown-up Wadanohara, her familiars, and Minami. [10]

The true ending was originally very different. Tempted by Syakesan, Fukami betrays Wadanohara and kills Memoca. Dolpi dies protecting her master from him, and Wadanohara ends up killing Fukami. Syakesan mortally wounds Samekichi; he is then killed by Wadanohara. She sacrifices herself to restore the sea to its former state and disappears. In despair, Samekichi ends his own life. [9]
