— Wadanohara, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea

Wadanohara (大海原) is the main protagonist of Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea. She is a young sea witch and the daughter of Meikai, the Great Sorcerer. She cares deeply for the sea and her familiar Samekichi.

Physical Description

Wadanohara's appearance changes with various outfits throughout the game, depending on the ending. However, her brown hair always has short blunt bangs and kept in two braided tails. She also has raceless white skin.

Wadanohara's appearance in the beginning of the game.

Wadanohara's first outfit is a white sailor uniform accented with navy blue stripes. Her knee-high socks are navy blue with a white stripe near the top. A navy blue bow rests on the back of her outfit. Black Mary Janes are her shoes of choice. Her hair is tied up with two navy blue ribbons. A small sailor cap with a ribbon rests on her head. She also wears bloomers underneath her dresses as they are much easier to deal with when living in the sea. [1] She is also stated to be flat-chested. [2]

Wadanohara's appearance for the majority of the game as well as the design of her official character portrait.

Wadanohara has no breasts and is "an eternal chopping board (flat)." [3] Wadanohara's second outfit, given to her by Tatsumiya, is also a sailor uniform. The shirt is dark blue with white accents. Underneath, she wears a white turtleneck. The skirt is also dark blue with a white stripe on the hem. Her blue boots are decorated with a thin white stripe. On her back is a large red, white, and blue bow. Her hair is tied with two ribbons, matching the large bow on her back. Her hat is a large blue witch hat with a similar striped ribbon accenting it, along with a silver anchor. In Wadanohara's first and second outfit, her eyes are gray. Deep-Sea Prisoner has said that it is due to Wadanohara being an innocent person, unstained by any color. It was none other than Samekichi who affirmed this in her. [4]

Wadanohara's appearance in Normal End 1 after she is corrupted by Syakesan.

In the first normal ending, Wadanohara joins the Sea of Death. Her red shirt is a sleeveless sailor-style top with six yellow buttons and a dark red bow. The skirt is shorter [2] and has a white petticoat underneath. Her knee-high socks and the bow on her back are both dark red. Her red hat is accented with a dark red and black ribbon. The anchor accessory has been replaced with a red-eye, matching the many eyes visible under the brim of her hat. Her hair ribbons and gloves are both dark red as well. Wadanohara's eyes also changed color, going from gray to bright red with black pupils; according to her end game bio, they are "stained with blood." According to the translated Deep-Sea Prisoner comics, the eyes on Wadanohara's Normal End 1 outfit change depending on her emotions.

Wadanohara's appearance in Normal End 2 after she chooses to sacrifice herself in the same manner as her father.

In the second normal ending, Wadanohara sacrifices her life to restore peace to the Blue Sea. Her light blue shirt has six white buttons and a white ribbon at the front. The skirt splits, revealing a white petticoat underneath. On her back is a dark blue ribbon. Her shoes are dark blue Mary Janes with no visible socks. Her hat is a lighter shade of blue, accented with a ribbon matching the one on her back. The ribbon also gains four more ends. The anchor on her hat has been replaced with a light blue crescent moon and two stars. Two blue ribbons tie her hair into two braids. Instead of the original gray, her eyes are blue whilst her pupils remain white.

Wadanohara's appearance in the True Ending hundreds of years after the events of the game.

In the true ending, Wadanohara waits for Samekichi to return from the Sea of Death. Her dress is navy blue with darker navy accents. Behind her is a type of cape that goes down to her ankles; it is decorated with a lighter navy blue stripe on the inside. The ribbon on the back is of a dark navy blue color. Her hat is navy and accented with a darker navy ribbon. The decorative anchor on her hat is replaced with many hooks and chains that dangle beneath the hat's rim. She wears navy stockings and lighter navy boots. Her eyes are still gray, but her pupils are black; they return to being white once she is reunited with Samekichi. Wadanohara also gains 1 cm of height in the true ending. [5] Wadanohara's hair is longer, reaching around knee-length, and tied with navy ribbons. In adulthood she often sleeps with her hair tied up. Sometimes it is worn in braids, other times a ponytail. [6]

Personality

Wadanohara is shown to be very kind and warm to everyone around her. She has a deep love for the Blue Sea and her friends who inhabit it. As such, she strives to solve any predicament disrupting the peace of her home and those she loves. When her friends are confronted with a problem or chore, Wadanohara assists and helps them in any way she can. She for instance gathered starfruits for Nekoyama after he passed out due to overwork and brought Irena apples from the surface as she could not get them herself. Although, as a result of being relied on to resolve conflict and desiring to help those in need, Wadanohara is burdened with more responsibility than she can handle.

Wadanohara saddened as Samekichi tells her to leave the Blue Sea

She tends to not speak of her own worries and has a habit of hiding her feelings when bothered or distressed, showing she cares more about the happiness of others and would rather not have anyone worry about her. She never gets angry and does not take anyone's mistreatment of her to heart, even rationalizing it at times. When Samekichi repeatedly fights and threatens Wadanohara in an attempt to make her leave the Blue Sea, she does not get mad but rather believes there must be a reason he acts the way he does towards her. She also gave Syakesan the benefit of the doubt when he told her he was the ambassador of the Sea of Death. This trait of believing people is pursued to mistreat others rather than choosing to do so by themselves seems to stem from Wadanohara's naivety. Wadanohara is known to be quite honest with others as well as taking jokes and sarcasm as they are. [7]

In the future, Wadanohara still maintains the same cheerful mentality she had when she was younger, though she displays a calmer and more composed demeanor.

Wadanohara playing the piano

As stated in the manga, Wadanohara's favorite color is white and the color of the sea. Her favorite food is "candy and anything delicious." She enjoys playing instruments such as the piano and her ocarina. She also likes ducks and enjoys birdwatching. [5] Some of her hobbies include drawing and reading. [5] She does not like violence, evident in how frightened she becomes when her familiar Fukami injures Samekichi, or when her familiars initiate violence with him in general. She does not normally drink alcohol, but if she were to, she would fall asleep after a couple of drinks. [8] In the first normal ending, The Red Sea Witch, her hobby changes to "XXX". [5] Regular Wadanohara would not wear sexy cosplays, but her "red" version would. [9] Wadanohara's stomach and armpits are sensitive spots for her. [10]

Wadanohara does not know the genderbend spell and would not think of using it. [11] If she learns the spell, she will have no problem using it. [11] Red Wadanohara will gladly use her magic to genderbend and use it on Syakesan until he cannot stand. [11]

Background

Wadanohara was born from an egg had between her father Meikai and her mother. Wadanohara has never met her parents because they were both absent prior to her birth. In place of her parents, Tatsumiya raised Wadanohara, teaching the young witch all the spells she had been taught by Meikai.

Relatives

Meikai

Meikai is Wadanohara's father, who was never present in Wadanohara's life; he sacrificed his life before Wadanohara was born to seal away Mikotsuhime. Wadanohara loves her father dearly, even if the only instance of them meeting is in a dream in which Meikai grants Wadanohara his staff, which was the only time they ever truly interacted with one another. A portrait of him is hung in the foyer of their house. While Meikai disappeared before he could personally meet his daughter, he loved her dearly in his final moments of life. After his death, he became the Cast Pearl above the Sea King's palace, posthumously protecting the kingdom and in a way, his daughter. In one of the endings, following the ideals of her father, Wadanohara sacrifices her life to protect the Blue Sea Kingdom.

Unnamed Mother

Wadanohara has never met her mother. She had hatched from an egg after her mother had already passed away.

Samekichi

Main article: Samekichi and Wadanohara (Relationship)

Samekichi is Wadanohara’s husband and familiar. They have been through a lot together and care for each other dearly. They have a son by the name of Minami.

Samekichi met Wadanohara when she found him injured on a rock. She glided down to offer him help and offered him help and food. Since then, they began to meet each other frequently, and Wadanohara eventually asked him to become her familiar. Samekichi accepted the offer but asked Wadanohara to give him a name beforehand, thus earning him the nickname "Samekichi."

Samekichi gifting Wadanohara an ocarina

Samekichi began assisting and helping Wadanohara with her errands and tagged along with her adventures, developing romantic feelings for her overtime. One night on Star Isle, Samekichi gifted Wadanohara an ocarina, a present she greatly cherished. When he then confessed his feelings for her, it at first seemed as though she reciprocated his feelings, though he soon realized that she misinterpreted what he said. Instead of reiterating himself, he chose to confess to her another time. When Syakesan casted a curse on Wadanohara’s heart which erased her memories of the time he stole the Sacred Sword and assaulted her, Samekichi was forced to not mention the incident, or otherwise the curse would devour Wadanohara. When she later visited the Witch World with her familiars to cure her amnesia and came back to the Blue Sea after hearing a war is approaching, Samekichi repeatedly attempted to make Wadanohara leave the Blue Sea, while Wadanohara was unsure why. She later regains memory of everything that happened once Syakesan was revealed to be the ambassador of the Sea of Death.

Wadanohara and Samekichi's reunion

When Syakesan stabbed Wadanohara with the Sacred Sword, Samekichi took Wadanohara's blood and went to the Sea of Death to avenge his brother and bring back peace in the Blue Sea. For the time he is gone, Wadanohara plays her ocarina and protects her sea, believing that one day he will return home. When he does return, the two hug each other underneath the moon and promise not to leave each other again.

Wadanohara and Samekichi later married and had a son named Minami. They retain the same level of “pure love years” even after he is born. [2] Their wedding was more akin to a shrine ceremony than a regular wedding. [12] Deep-Sea Prisoner has since explained that she would like to draw their wedding in the future. [13] No matter the gender, Samekichi and Wadanohara are stated to have a "yuri-like vibe" that is primitive and teasing. [14]

Minami

Minami is Wadanohara and Samekichi’s son. They are very close and often seen together. Both have similar hobbies, interests, and even similar personalities. [15] Minami is said to be pure like her. [9] On a now deleted Twitter post, Deep-Sea Prisoner revealed Minami was born from an egg similarly to how Wadanohara was. [16] However, he was conceived naturally. [17]

Familiars

Memoca

Memoca is Wadanohara's familiar and friend. Memoca typically speaks in an informal and casual manner to Wadanohara, using the nicknames "Wadda" or "Wadachi" to refer to her. Memoca was Wadanohara's first familiar after Samekichi disappeared. [18] [12] She is also the second oldest familiar of Wadanohara. [19] Because of this, she is trusted by Wadanohara who will often tell Memoca of her old memories. [19] Memoca has a sense of responsibility as Wadanohara's familiar, and when she saw Wadanohara crying over Samekichi, she knew she had to take the initiative to protect her. [19] She is also the one that introduced Fukami to Wadanohara. [20] Wadanohara trusts Memoca, and they have been friends for a long time. [12]

Dolpi

Dolpi is Wadanohara's youngest familiar and friend. She is usually protected or comforted by Wadanohara in a maternal manner. Wadanohara usually comforts her when she cries and scolds Memoca for teasing her. Along with Memoca and Fukami, Dolpi was one of the three familiars accompanying Wadanohara to the Witch World and returned with her to the Blue Sea. Dolpi was the second familiar to join Wadanohara after Memoca. [12]

Fukami

Fukami is Wadanohara’s familiar and unrequited love interest. He was the last to join her after Memoca and Dolpi. [12] Upon first impression, Fukami initially thought, "Is this kid really the Sea Witch? Why do I have to protect this little brat?" Now he thinks she is adorable. [20] As they spent more and more time together, Fukami became enamored with her.[20] He is deeply devoted to Wadanohara and does not hesitate to inflict violence on those who try to hurt or threaten her. Wadanohara sometimes appears troubled and confused by the things Fukami says to her but still treats and regards him as her friend and familiar.

Jealous of Wadanohara's love for Samekichi, Fukami tends to question her relationship with him - reminding her that he is a traitor and therefore cannot be trusted. When Wadanohara and her familiars were in the Witch World, Fukami purposely left Wadanohara’s ocarina behind, a present given to her by Samekichi. Whenever he is near, Fukami will insult and try to injure Samekichi, which frightens Wadanohara.

絵:涙4

Fukami consoling Wadanohara.

When Samekichi left to avenge his brother Syakesan, Fukami noticed how heartbroken Wadanohara was about him leaving and accepted her love for him. He then comforted her as she cried on his shirt.

Deep-Sea Prisoner has stated that Fukami's love for Wadanohara will stay unrequited forever, and it has not changed at all. [4] When he saw Wadanohara prioritize what she had to do over his feelings, it made him realize he had been caught up in his own selfish emotions. Watching over and supporting her happiness became the love he gave her. [4]

During the second bad ending of the game, Fukami becomes corrupted by the Sea of Death and kills Wadanohara alongside Dolpi and Memoca. During Normal End 1, Fukami was among one of the last survivors of the Blue Sea before eventually being decapitated by Wadanohara. [10] It was stated the way he died was similar to the way it was portrayed in her nightmare. [10]

Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea Cast

Syakesan

Syakesan was one of Wadanohara's fellow court retainers, and both were on good terms with each other at the beginning. Underneath his guise of being one of Uomihime's retainers, he was actually the Ambassador of the Sea of Death - a person foretold to destroy the Blue Sea Kingdom - and used Wadanohara in his plan to do so.

絵:嘘と油断2

Syakesan stabbing Wadanohara

He attempted to assault her once, casting a curse on her after the attempt that would wipe her memory and destroy her if she remembered the incident. Syakesan, like his twin brother Samekichi, was in love with Wadanohara, albeit in a twisted way. In one of the endings of Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea, it is implied he sexually assaulted her, which later resulted in her becoming a Red Sea denizen herself, and it is seen from various mini-comics that they are lovers in this timeline.

On a livestream, when asked why Syakesan had such a distorted affection for Wadanohara, Deep-Sea Prisoner responded even though it is hard to tell with the game pixels, it can be implied (in the Reboot bonus scene) that Wadanohara may resemble Syakesan's mother Namikaze. It was then stated when Syakesan first met Wadanohara she was extremely kind to him, which Syakesan happily loved. [21]

Unlike with Samekichi, Syakesan and Wadanohara would never marry or have a child. [22]

In Funamushi Private Deep-Sea Academy, Syakesan has no romantic interest in Wadanohara. [9]

Red Wadanohara will gladly use her magic to genderbend and use it on Syakesan until he cannot stand. [11] Even after the "The Red Sea Witch" ending, Syakesan is still jealous of Samekichi. When he sees Wadanohara with him, he becomes very upset. [23]

Tatsumiya and Wadanohara

Tatsumiya is Wadanohara's foster mother, taking on the role in the absence of Wadanohara's parents. After Meikai's sacrifice, she presumably waited until Wadanohara hatched from her egg and raised her. Wadanohara views, treats, and loves Tatsumiya as if she was her real mother. Most of the magic Wadanohara knows was taught to her by Tatsumiya. She cares for and loves Wadanohara, carrying out the wishes of her master. She often frets over Wadanohara, worrying about her health and problems. In the past, she would be upset whenever Wadanohara stayed out too late. Furthermore, Tatsumiya was concerned that Wadanohara felt bound to the sea and wanted her to live a fulfilling life regardless of where she goes. Wadanohara's response that she is staying in the sea because she loves the sea greatly relieved her. Before Wadanohara sets out to fix the barrier, Tatsumiya gifted her a new set of clothes. In turn, Wadanohara loves Tatsumiya as her parent, worrying over her wellbeing and health. She expressed deep concern when she found out Tatsumiya had been poisoned.

Uomihime

Uomihime is Wadanohara's princess. Wadanohara treats Uomihime with the utmost respect; she fixes the Barrier Stones that protect the kingdom at the behest of Uomihime. Wadanohara filled the position of the Blue Sea Kingdom protector for Uomihime and the kingdom after the position was left vacant upon Meikai's death. As one of the retainers of Uomihime, Wadanohara often runs errands and tasks.

Mikotsuhime

Helica is one of Wadanohara's friends. Wadanohara tried to calm Helica down when she was on a rampage and Helica then fought her and her familiars. When she calmed down she became glad Wadanohara was there. Helica thinks of Wadanohara as their biggest hope. [24]

Pulmo

WaddaPulmoTalk

Pulmo is Wadanohara's friend. When Wadanohara came back from her journey, she was greeted by Pulmo on the way to the town, who asked about her trip and reassured Wadanohara the situation was currently fine before leaving to inform the castle of her return. In the manga, when Wadanohara was taking a walk to go greet her friends, she collided against Pulmo's fluffy skirt. She asked her about her surface experience, hugging Wadanohara as she daydreamed of leaving the sea too. In the next chapter, Pulmo suddenly appeared in Wadanohara's window, startling her, and telling her the princess had summoned her.

Ver Million

Ver Million is one of Wadanohara's friends. They met sometime in the past. [25] In Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea, Ver was upset when she learnt the job she had taken up for the Totsusa Kingdom involved having to fight Wadanohara. She was later shown worrying for Wadanohara's safety during the Sea of Death's invasion. However, Ver had also expressed she values her job duties over everything else and refused to quit or make an exception for Wadanohara.

Aom

Aom is one of Wadanohara's friends. Aom harbors a deep sense of respect towards her. When Wadanohara returned to the Blue Sea after visiting the Witch World, she had a brief conversation with Aom who described her as still “being in kid at heart” and on the “slow side.” Wadanohara, in turn, was confused by this.

Irena

Irena is one of Wadanohara's friends. Irena often sends Wadanohara to complete errands for her, such as getting apples. When Wadanohara came back to the Blue Sea, Irena asked if she wanted to sleep with her, to which Wadanohara declined because whenever the two sleep together, Irena squeezes her.

Tarako

Tarako is Wadanohara's friend. When she came back in the game, Tarako wanted to "octokiss" her, which she politely declined. They then asked her to come play with them again some day. During a flashback sequence, she went with Tarako to get treasure chests Tarako claimed to have seen, but it turned out they were empty. Tarako apologized to Wadanohara for not being able to give her a gift; Wadanohara did not mind it at all as the gesture enough made her happy.

Tarako enjoys Wadanohara's music and comes over to Wadanohara's home to listen to her play piano and doodle with the witch as well.

Nekoyama

Nekoyama is one of Wadanohara's friends. Nekoyama delivered Wadanohara's beloved ocarina and returned it on several occasions when it was lost. They share a humorous relationship - Wadanohara saved him by feeding him starfruit when he fainted exhausted in Star Isle after overworking himself.

Chlomaki

絵:虹の島2-1

Chlomaki and Wadanohara

Chlomaki is a fellow friend and witch of Wadanohara. Wadanohara looks up to Chlomaki and refers to her as “Chlomaki-san.” They met sometime in the past and get along well. It has also been implied Chlomaki sees a lot of herself in Wadanohara, as both are witches who endured traumatic events in the past and ended up falling in love with one of their familiars.

Chlomaki was the one who introduced Wadanohara to the Great Witch in hopes she might be able to cure Wadanohara's amnesia. Afterwards, Chlomaki traveled from the Witch World to the Blue Sea in order to deliver Wadanohara’s ocarina back after Fukami purposely left it behind. She later comes to Wadanohara’s aid when she and her familiars are surrounded by a number of Totsusa Soldiers and uses her blood and her familiar Lobco to wipe them out.

Great Witch

The Great Witch is Wadanohara's acquaintance, introduced to each other by Chlomaki. Wadanohara came to the Great Witch in order to be cured of her amnesia, though the Great Witch could not heal her, discovering the amnesia was the result of a curse.

Lobco

Lobco is Wadanohara's friend, typically seen interacting with her when around Chlomaki. Wadanohara attempts to cheer up Lobco whenever she is upset. Since Lobco grew up in the Blue Sea with Wadanohara, Deep-Sea Prisoner said, "Speaking in a wider sense, you could call them childhood friends." [26]

Cherryblod & Doloz

Cherryblod and Doloz are Wadanohara's friends. When Cherryblod was poisoned, Wadanohara sought to come check up on both Doloz and Cherryblod, caring about their wellbeing.

Idate

Idate is Wadanohara's acquaintance. When Wadanohara first encountered Idate during the game, he refused to say his name simply stating he is an orca on a stroll. He attempted to eat her once and was successful in Bad Ending 1. Even though he tried to eat her and injured Samekichi, Wadanohara does not hold it against him; she even placed enough trust in him to request he protect Tatsumiya after her encounter with Old, although he brushed it off as simply having nothing else to do.

Creamil, Minero, Rimorimo, & Tomoshibi

They are Wadanohara's friends.

  • The very first text dialogue spoken by someone upon starting the game is Wadanohara's. She said those words in the sequences of the True Ending upon returning to her boat. The dialogue goes as follows:
"...Of course I knew. We felt... the same way..."
"I'm a fool. Why? Why couldn't I notice something within my own self?"
"...It's too late. Much too late, for everything. And it's my fault... all of it. If only... I had done better. ...I'm sorry. And yet... Now, I can't even tell you that. ...I'm sorry."

Wadanohara monologuing to the player, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
Now then. Shall we begin? This is the story of a witch…
Wadanohara monologuing to the player, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
Hello. My name is Wadanohara. I’m a witch!
Right now, I’m traveling with my familiars to return to my home sea.
All right, better get moving…
Wadanohara, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
I’m not bound to this sea. I’m here… because I want to be.
I love this sea. I was born here… It raised me… There’s trouble here, too.
But that won’t make me give up. It just makes my love for my home stronger!
And please, don’t say something so lonely… I’d be pained leaving you, Tatsumiya.
Wadanohara, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea

Wadanohara, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea

Just, I like to see… the sea after the sunset. The full moon and sea…
When I see them together, I can feel truly calm.
I’m not sure why, But it gives me a really nostalgic feeling…
Yet, It’s always something I feel right beside me. Somehow… It’s both. Strange, huh…?
Wadanohara to Samekichi, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
Eheh. Honestly, I do feel like that a little, sometimes. But… I don’t know why. But I almost never feel lonely.
I’ve never seen his face, so maybe it’s harder to feel like he’s gone?
On the other hand, I know a lot about my father from what people have said.
And you see, I have this feeling… That someday, I will meet him.
Wadanohara to Samekichi, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
…Of course I knew. We felt… The same way… I’m a fool.
Why? Why couldn’t I notice something within my own self?... It’s too late. Much too late, for everything.
And it’s my fault… all of it. If only… I had done better…I’m sorry.
And yet… Now, I can’t even tell you that…..I’m sorry.
Wadanohara, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
…I told myself that when we meet again, I wouldn’t cry…
I’d be strong, and that’s what got me through each day.
But… I guess there was no point in that. Eheh…
