” |
The Gray Garden (灰色庭園) is Deep-Sea Prisoner's second game, released on the 27th of December, 2012. The game centers around Yosafire who lives in the Gray Garden, a peaceful world inhabited by angels and demons alike.
Premise[]
The Gray Garden centers around a demon named Yosafire and her friends Froze, Rawberry, and Macarona who work together to stop the residents of the Flame Underworld from invading their own world, the Gray Garden.
Age Rating[]
Deep-Sea Prisoner's rating for The Gray Garden is "all-ages." However, this age rating is based on Japanese ratings and may thus vary from country-to-country.
The Gray Garden contains limited blood and gore. Near the end of the game, there is a scene with implied sexual assault. The depictions of mature themes in The Gray Garden are milder than in Deep-Sea Prisoner's other games, such as Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea and Mogeko Castle.
Chronology[]
No foreknowledge is required to play The Gray Garden.
Chronologically, The Gray Garden takes place after The Sun's Curse, though it is recommended to view The Gray Garden before viewing The Sun's Curse.
Deep-Sea Prisoner has also released a short spin-off game of The Gray Garden titled Garden Gray The, depicting a select few of the The Gray Garden cast as the opposite sex.
Gameplay[]
The Gray Garden is explored using arrow keys. Confirming an action can be done with the Z, enter, or space keys, while canceling out of an action can be done with the X or escape key.
Money and EXP (experience points) can be obtained after defeating an enemy. Money can be used to obtain items in the shop, while EXP can increase a character's level, which lets them learn more skills that can be used in battle.
When the player interacts with an enemy, they will engage in a battle with them that shows their HP (health points) and MP (magic points). They are given three options, them being "Battle," "Auto," and "Escape." When choosing the "Battle" option, the player will be greeted with four more options: "Attack," "Magic," "Guard," and "Item." "Attack" will make the character attack the enemy regularly. "Magic" will let the player choose a variety of skills to attack the enemy with. The skills a character has are obtained throughout the game as their EXP is increased. Each skill contains a short description. The more critical a skill is, the more MP in using it will cost. "Guard" allows the player to guard whichever character from the enemy in a turn. "Item" allows the player to use items during battle, either to increase HP or MP or attack the enemy, and other such things. Each item contains a short description.
The "Auto" option in battle lets the battle happen automatically; the actions a character will take against the enemy are chosen randomly. The "Escape" option allows the player to escape from battle. Some battles will not show the "Escape" option, such as certain boss battles.

An old sprite expressions sheet of the The Gray Garden cast
The Gray Garden was released on December 27, 2012. It is currently unknown when Deep-Sea Prisoner started production on the game.
In regards to the story, Deep-Sea Prisoner has said The Gray Garden was to be made less intense than her other game Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea despite Ivlis and his subordinates attacking. The purpose of this was to reinforce the peaceful impression of the world. [1]
A few supposed concept artworks of The Gray Garden characters can be found on Deep-Sea Prisoner's website funamusea.com. One of these artworks is a sprite expression sheet of the main The Gray Garden cast in an art style different from the final game, but similar to the original Mogeko Castle's.

Yosafire's introduction
Once they both arrive in Dialo and Chelan's house, Froze tells Dialo about Yosafire’s injuries and both poke fun at Yosafire for her clumsiness. After eating pie together, Dialo points out that Yosafire has gained weight. Worried, Yosafire decides to begin exercising.

They all eat pie together. When Dialo realizes how much more pie is left, Chelan suggests sharing it with others. Yosafire decides to deliver the pie to Blancblack Castle, and Froze tags along. Once they arrive, they give the pie to Etihw and Kcalb and then leave.

Froze finds Yosafire passed out on the ground.
It is nighttime, and Yosafire is still awake in bed. She looks out the window and decides to go to the garden to watch the stars.
Once Yosafire arrives at the garden, she gets attacked by a Flame Bat. Startled and scared, Yosafire calls Froze for her help. Receiving a phone call late at night confuses Froze, but she quickly becomes worried when she realizes it's Yosafire pleading for help. Grora asks Kcalb if he will use his servants Ater and Arbus for help, and Kcalb says he is unsure, because they don’t always follow orders accordingly. Grora then jokes about Kcalb having “too many loose cannons,” which Etihw faintly laughs at.
It cuts back to Yosafire, who is writing in her diary after a few days have passed. She decides to go to Blancblack Castle with Macarona and Rawberry to check on Froze. At the castle’s entry she finds Grora and asks what Froze has been doing. Grora tells her that Froze will investigate the Flame Bats in the far east, and Yosafire asks if she can come with her. Grora allows her and grants Etihw’s permission to let her do so.

It cuts back to Kcalb looking at the window before Ater and Arbus suddenly appear behind him. He asks them about their progress with investigating the Flame Bats but finds that they have not found anything.
It then cuts back to Yosafire and her friends searching through the Daybreak Forest. They find nothing there and continue to the next forest, Midday Forest. They find nothing there either, and continue to Evening Forest where they find two Flame Bats in the distance. Froze tries to call Etihw on her cellphone but is unable to. She decides that they retreat to the castle and report what they have seen to Etihw. Rawberry however disregards what Froze says, and runs towards the Flame Bats to eat them. Froze, Macarona, and Yosafire are all startled by this and follow her. On the way, they find Etihw’s stones, which are the source of signal in their world, shattered on the ground.

Macarona stops Rawberry from going on a rampage

Yosafire wakes up in her bed. She is glad everything has gone back to normal and wonders if everything that happened was a dream. She goes outside and meets with Froze, Macarona, and Rawberry, who agree that everything that happened did feel like a dream. Yosafire decides to go to Blancblack Castle to check on Kcalb.
It cuts to Kcalb and Etihw in the castle's garden. They have a brief conversation about the invasion of their world and Kcalb's injuries. Kcalb notices that Reficul is around and asks her to show herself. She introduces herself as a devil that hails from elsewhere, and tells Kcalb that she hopes she will meet him in a gathering between devils. Kcalb comments that he does not want to go and Etihw calls him shy. Yosafire interrupts their ordeal and apologizes for doing so before quickly running away.
Yosafire goes to the Gray Village and finds her friends all gathered together. Dialo says she figured it would be a good idea to treat everyone to apple pie. Yosafire notices that Froze is not with them and goes to the garden to bring her.
Once at the garden, Yosafire explains to Froze that she and everyone else will go collect apples together to make apple pie. Froze explains to Yosafire that although she can be difficult and quick to anger, she is grateful for everything Yosafire has done. Yosafire tries to get Froze to smile and suggests that she try smiling a day at a time so it will not be embarrassing anymore. They begin going to Apple Park.
Peaceful days went on for the Gray Garden's inhabitants. From there, the game ends.

Various[]
- The Flame Bat who attacks Yosafire at night during the second intermission was sent by Emalf. [2] He was instructed to send it by Ivlis. [2] The same bat was also the one to create the hole that Yosafire falls into in the beginning of the game. [2]
- In the library, an NPC angel mentions enjoying a book by the name of "The Wharf Roach Testament" written by S.T.N. This is a hint at Satanick being the author.
- It is a homoerotic novel; how it wound up there is "a mystery." Apparently someone brought it over by mistake. [3]
- There are a few minor bonuses in The Gray Garden that only occur during the second playthrough. [4]
- Yosafire will not need to collect any apples for Dialo to proceed in the game. [4]
- Froze's house will contain a 666 Ticket, which the player can use to summon Reficul during battle. [4]
- A side area in the Evening Forest formerly blocked by plants will be open. A Mogeko there will make Yosafire max level and give her Prosciutto Equipment. [4]
- The "???" video in the bonus room will differ from the video in the first playthrough. [4]

"Unko"
- In the corner of some of the maps on the path to Blancblack Castle, flower patches can be seen spelling out the Japanese word "unko" meaning "poop." [5]
- When coming back to the castle at the end of the game and everything is on fire, the flames prefix it with "geri" meaning "diarrhea." [5]
- If the player goes to the Beach after defeating Ivlis, a Mogeko there will give Yosafire an item called Radio Wave. Inserting this item later in the television in the bonus room will show Met's Bloody Radio interview with Yosafire.
