Old (オルド) is one of the antagonists in Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea. He was a humanoid shark and inhabitant of the Sea of Death. He was also the former familiar of Meikai and father to Samekichi and Syakesan.
Physical Description
Old had raceless white skin, messy black hair tied in a ponytail, a dorsal fin on his head, and three large scars on his face over each of his eyes, two on the right forming a cross and upon his left a thick vertical scar. His tail was also badly scarred, covered in nicks and scratches. He wore a long black coat over his shoulders, gray dress shirt, and black tie. His pants and boots were also black. He also wore boxers. [1]
When he was young, Old wore a fleece turtleneck button-up jacket with white fur lining, and his ponytail was short and reached just below his shoulders. Instead of three scars around his eyes, he only had one on his right eye.
Personality
Much of Old's personality before the war of the Blue Sea remains a mystery. In the past, he had a streak of cockiness, believing himself to be the better than Meikai's other familiar Tatsumiya, fit to wield the Sacred Sword. Upon discovering the responsibility would be entrusted to her instead, he became irrevocably wounded.
Deeply begrudged Tatsumiya was given the responsibility, Old would come to loathe Meikai and her, leading him to betray the two. Upon encountering Tatsumiya again on the field of battle, Old attacked her with an intense rage for the slight upon his honor.
After being sealed with Mikotsuhime for so long, Old no longer held any affection for anyone. The only thing that remained was his desire to avenge himself by harming Tatsumiya for the scars she gave him.
Background
In the past, Old was one of Meikai's familiars alongside Tatsumiya. One day, Meikai was handed the Sacred Sword — an item immensely important to the Blue Sea Kingdom — by the Sea King, ruler of the kingdom. The Sea King tasked Meikai with a difficult conundrum; he would have to decide between the two of his familiars which was worthy of wielding the blade. Having believed he would reign superior and be chosen to hold the blade, Old became indignant upon the revelation, instead of him, Tatsumiya would be chosen as wielder instead.
Engulfed with rage and jealousy, Old would end up defecting to Mikotsuhime's side. He would later end up battling Tatsumiya, who would go on to leave him covered in his signature scars. Along with Mikotsuhime and other denizens of the Sea of Death, Old was sealed away by Meikai's sacrifice.
At some point in the past, Old met Namikaze and ended up impregnating her with twins Syakesan and Samekichi.
In Funamushi Private Deep-Sea Academy, he raises his kids as a single father, the mother having left because she had enough of him. [2]

Relatives
Syakesan
Syakesan was Old's eldest son, although they do not know of their familial relationship. His father and him bear a strong resemblance to each other along with similar reasons to have chosen to side with the Sea of Death.
Samekichi
Samekichi was Old's younger son, although they do not know about their familial relationship. His father and him bear a strong resemblance to each other. The two have both been accused of being traitors to the Sea Kingdom. Tatsumiya makes this connection in the manga when thinking of Old and Samekichi's striking resemblance and seemingly same fate. Samekichi's "tsundere" nature is said to be inherited from his father. [3]
Minami
Minami is Old's grandson. The two have never met.
Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea Cast
Meikai
Meikai was Old's former master. In the past, Meikai had been given a choice to choose between his familiars as to who would wield the Sacred Sword; his ultimate choice was Tatsumiya, causing Old to defect from both Meikai and the Blue Sea in favor of joining the Sea of Death's forces.
The feelings Old has for his former master is conflicting and strange. Upon encountering Tatsumiya and conversing with her, Old refers to Meikai in disdain, despite being shown to harbor unreciprocated romantic feelings to Meikai. Sheep has accused Meikai of seemingly "stealing" Old, suggesting Old may have lingering affections for his former master. As of the 2017/10/21 update, Old is shown to have had romantic feelings towards Meikai; however, these feelings seem to have died off, and Old is shown to have a remorseful face.
In Funamushi Private Deep-Sea Academy, Old and Meikai have a good relationship. Old, Meikai, and Tatsumiya all work together in the same company, and Old and Tatsumiya are subordinates. They all often go out drinking on their way home from work. [2]
Mikotsuhime
Mikotsuhime was Old's princess and he works as one of her subordinates. He is regarded as one of the stronger denizens of the Sea of Death and recognized in this high regard by the other residents.
Tatsumiya
Tatsumiya was Old's former fellow familiar serving under Meikai. One day, the responsibility of choosing the wielder of the Blue Sea Kingdom's Sacred Sword was given to Meikai by the Sea King, with the sorcerer being given the choice between his familiars Old and Tatsumiya. The moment Tatsumiya was chosen, her relationship with Old was permanently shattered, as he betrayed her and their master.
Upon being found in the field of battle after Old betrayed her and Meikai, Old viciously attacked her, for the grievances she had inadvertently caused him. Without any other choice, Tatsumiya was forced to retaliate, giving Old permanent scars around his eyes.
The two are now mortal enemies, willing to slay the other without any other thought. Old holds an unshakable vendetta against her and desires to watch her suffer for the suffering he was given at her hands. Inversely, Tatsumiya refuses to forgive him for his betrayal, holding no affection for him — partially due to his part in indirectly causing Meikai's disappearance.
Old later participated in the Sea of Death's attack on the Blue Sea. He confronted Tatsumiya, saying he was going to get revenge on her for scarring his face. When he went to attack Tatsumiya, he was stopped by Idate. Despite the anger for his betrayal, Tatsumiya seems to hold Old somewhat dear to her despite everything that happened between them, as the manga shows her breaking in tears when Old ignored her calling his name after he had been defeated. She also never forgot about him, reminded of him when Samekichi was thought to have betrayed Wadanohara, comparing the two of them.
In a bonus comic in the manga, a glimpse of their past as comrades is shown. Tatsumiya's antennae became tangled, attempting to untangle them to no avail. Hence, she turned to Old for help. However, he ended up making it worse, curling up in shame after seeing the result. Tatsumiya was also shown to understand Meikai's relationship with Old better than himself, who questioned why he sometimes fell asleep resting with Old. Tatsumiya assumed this was a sign of his trust for Old, which Meikai agreed with.
In Funamushi Private Deep-Sea Academy, Old, Meikai, and Tatsumiya all work together in the same company, and Old and Tatsumiya are subordinates. All of them often go out drinking on their way home from work. [2]
Sheep
Sheep was one of Old's comrades in the Sea of Death. He has been shown feeling confused in their presence because of how touchy the nautilus was getting. Sheep, on the other hand, shows to have an interest in the shark; this could be further proven by the fact Old is the only thing listed in the likes of their bio in the bonus room. They have also been shown in one artwork together.
Squid, Stella, & Tsuribari
They were Old's fellow comrades of the Sea of Death; they have been drawn in artwork together along with Sheep.
Namikaze
Namikaze was somehow involved with Old, winding up pregnant by him with Syakesan and Samekichi. The details of their relationship are, however, unknown. Deep-Sea Prisoner has stated she would like to one day write about how they met, though it is "not a nice encounter." [4]
Other Characters
Idate
Idate was Old's one-time torturer in Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea. Idate had quickly defeated him after Wadanohara had requested he do this in order to help Tatsumiya. Like Samekichi, Old was targeted by Idate on account of being a shark. Idate had also described Old to be the "wife-beater" type and expressed his distaste in "those type of guys." He was furthermore shown to be impressed by the fact, unlike Samekichi, Old was able to get back up from being beaten and still had energy to fight; in spite of this, their combat did not continue as Idate followed Wadanohara's request to take Tatsumiya somewhere safe.
Abilities
Natural Abilities
- Nigh-Absolute Immortality - Like most non-human characters in the Deep-Sea Universe, Old could not die from natural causes such as aging or disease. [5]
- Animal Transformation - Being a shark, he was able to switch between a humanoid and animal form.
- Underwater Breathing - Being a shark, he could naturally breathe underwater.
Trivia
- Old has been compared to Samekichi in the manga, as the young shark had been suspected by Tatsumiya to have been going down the same path as Old. The two also share similar fashion sense and have scars on their body. They both have been accused of being a traitor as well.
- This could imply Samekichi takes after his father; however, his choices lead him to a path opposite to his father's fate of residing in the Sea of Death.
- Old is one of Deep-Sea Prisoner's top tallest characters; he is shorter than Satanick, but taller than most characters who have listed heights.
- In an outdated QnA, when (jokingly) asked if Meikai was Old's wife, Deep-Sea Prisoner did not answer the question and instead questioned where the question about Old's homosexuality came from.
- In the English translation, Old often uses a plethora of language commonly associated with pirates such as "lass" (when referring to Tatsumiya).
