— Kurotsuno, Obsolete Dream chapter 5

Kurotsuno (クロツノ) is the main character of Obsolete Dream. She is a demon from Ne-no-Kuni and the daughter of Sullivan. In the past, she was a human by the name Olivia (オリヴィア).

Physical Description[]

Kurotsuno has long straight gray hair. She wears a basic three-button black vest over a plain white narrow-collared shirt, black tie, black box pleated skirt, black thigh-high socks with a white rim, and black knee-high boots. She also has black scleras and lime irises. Her demon horns are mismatched; one gray with three black stripes and a piercing, while the other has many geometric shapes and is black with white circles.

When going out, Kurotsuno wears a double-breasted coat or duffle cape and scarf over her usual attire.

As Olivia, she has long brown hair reaching her waist. She wears two silver earrings, one on each ear. She also has dark red eyes. She also wears a white vest with black buttons over a dark gray long-sleeved collared shirt, a white knife-pleated skirt with gray stockings, and tall white boots with black buttons.

Personality[]

Though Kurotsuno is ladylike in speech and mannerisms, [3] she often acts like a rebellious teenager - normally aloof and expressing little emotion, save for annoyance and rage. She rarely smiles, if ever. She becomes quickly annoyed by others and gives off the impression of merely tolerating company.

Kuro Fight

Kurotsuno breaking up a fight between Met and Bis

Kurotsuno does not hesitate in inflicting violence on others, regardless of how close they are to her. She easily beats up her father Sullivan and Met with little to no provocation. Though her violence is not of the sadistic sort; she uses violence as means to an end. Kurotsuno for instance has used violence to silence those she finds irritating, as well as in order to obtain a bag of her favorite chocolate. Most of Kurotsuno's rebellious nature is apparent in her interactions with her father Sullivan. Despite her father caring for her and wishing for her affection, Kurotsuno shuts him out and frequently insults him, calling him a "pest." In his attempt to enter her mansion, she hits him with a rock and beats him into the ground.

Something which particularly triggers a negative reaction out of Kurotsuno is being called by her former name Olivia, since this reminds her of her past, which she has a complicated relationship with. Occasionally a memory of hers floats up, sometimes in the form of a dream. However, she seems to have trouble dealing with these memories, frequently suppressing her emotions and thoughts, saying "[it's] pointless to even think about."

The Past

Kurotsuno reaching for the moon while trying to disregard her thoughts about the past

Kurotsuno also holds a particular fascination for the full moon. In the Obsolete Dream synopsis, it is said to be her favorite thing alongside chocolate and sweet pastries. In chapter 5 : Full Moon Met tells Bis that Kurotsuno behaves "kinda scary" on full moons, and advises against talking to her. Afterwards, Kurotsuno can be seen stretching out her hand towards the full moon while pondering the past. Later in chapter 8 : Traces that Don't Fade , Kurotsuno has a nightmare featuring the full moon and presumably her former self Olivia monologuing about trying to reach something with her hand, but failing to do so. After Hanten inquires about this nightmare, Kurotsuno denies having one and runs off.

At times, Kurotsuno displays a subtly softer side of herself. In chapter 6 : Smile for the Camera of Obsolete Dream, she finds Shikabone crying in Crow Forest and decides to comfort and offer him a handkerchief. Later in chapter 7 : Bloody Dad she also goes out of her way to visit Sullivan in the hospital after he had fainted, though she leaves again soon after.

As for her likes and dislikes, Kurotsuno's hobbies are moon-watching and photography. She also has a sweet tooth. Her favorite food is a brand of chocolate by the name of OCHO. She dislikes spicy and bitter food and only eats milk and white chocolate, [4] though she does not like mint chocolate of any sort. [5] Kurotsuno also enjoys visiting different places, hence why she was wandering around Mogeko Castle. [6]

Not much is known about Kurotsuno's personality back when she was a human. Her father Sullivan has commented that she was "much nicer" as Olivia. Olivia is also seen in the Obsolete Dream prologue where she gives off a gentle demeanor. Other supplementary images depict Olivia with a tired expression.

Early Life[]

Kurotsuno was formerly a human named Olivia. Her father is a demon named Sullivan. She also had a mother who died [2] from currently unknown causes. It is also unclear how it is possible for Kurotsuno to have been a human while her father has been a demon since his youth.

When she was younger, Olivia got along well with her father. However, at some point she started to have trouble with his strict and overprotective nature. [7] Later illustrations depicting her as older show her as less happy, with bags under her eyes.

Olivia Prologue

Olivia as seen in the Obsolete Dream prologue

When Olivia was a bit older, she befriended Hanten, who is Kurotsuno's best friend to this day. For currently unknown reasons, Olivia later transformed into a demon and changed her name to Kurotsuno, undergoing a drastic rebellious personality change alongside it as a reaction to Sullivan's overprotectiveness. [7] Kurotsuno now hates being called by her former name and seems resentful of her past and several of the currently unknown events that transpired in it.

Obsolete Dream[]

In the present day, Kurotsuno lives in her own mansion in Ne-no-Kuni, alongside Bis, Hanten, Met, and Reina. In Obsolete Dream chapter 1 : Black Demon , she spends the day inside her mansion with her friends, waiting for the rain to pass. Later in chapter 2 : 1.000 Years Rebellious , she visits Maekami's bar in Castle Town with Hanten. They later run into Met in Crow Forest. In chapter 3 : Witches' Antics , Kurotsuno goes shopping with Met and bumps into Chlomaki, after which they help Chlomaki retrieve a stone in exchange for Kurotsuno's favorite chocolates.

SadDad

Chapter 4: Sullivan is clueless as to why Kurotsuno shuts him out.

Kurotsuno's father, Sullivan, pays her a well-intended visit in chapter 4 : Immature Dad, Ignorant Daughter , though she violently chases him out without much hesitation. When Sullivan expresses his cluelessness about her reasons for doing so, Kurotsuno implies that it is (partially) due to his insistence on calling her by her old name "Olivia," though he is not around to hear her say this. Later in chapter 5 : Full Moon , Kurotsuno is seen pondering her past while reaching towards the full moon. When Bis expresses an intention to approach Kurotsuno, Met strongly advises her against doing so, saying Kurotsuno displays "kinda scary" behavior around the full moon.

Chapter 6 : Smile for the Camera shows Kurotsuno in her library, preparing her camera to take with her on a walk. She is seen stuffing away a picture frame, though it is not shown what the frame contains. Hanten invites herself along Kurotsuno's walk and they go to a forest. Inside the forest, Kurotsuno encounters Shikabone crying. She attempts to comfort and take a picture of him, but Hanten scares him off while he is trying to pose, much to Kurotsuno's frustration. To make it up to Kurotsuno, Hanten gives her a selfie, though Kurotsuno throws it away.

In chapter 7 : Bloody Dad , Kurotsuno and her friends have Chlomaki over for hot pot. Kurotsuno receives a call from Glasses during dinner however, notifying her that Sullivan has fainted and is in the hospital. She goes to visit him, though she berates him and smiles when his old "friend" and tormentor Gyakuten and his wife Chishibuki show up to to excruciate and bully him.

Handhold

Hanten holding Kurotsuno's hand

Chapter 8 : Traces that Don't Fade starts out with Kurotsuno having a nightmare. She dreams of presumably her former self Olivia trying to reach something with her hand but failing to do so. When Kurotsuno wakes up in cold sweat, Hanten is at her bed and grabs her hand in an attempt to comfort her, much to Kurotsuno's dismay. Hanten inquires about Kurotsuno's nightmare, who denies having one and runs off, slamming the door in the process. In the hallway Kurotsuno runs into Reina and they have a conversation. Reina suggests that a memory of Kurotsuno showed up because she dwells on her anxieties, but Kurotsuno replies that she is unsure.

In chapter 8.5 : Bath , Kurotsuno is taking a bath when Anten abruptly emerges out of the water after a nap and fancies Kurotsuno being there. Hanten then barges into the washroom, grabs Anten by the neck, completely ignoring any reasons he gave for being there, and cuts him to the pulp, leaving Kurotsuno looking rather confused.

While not explicitly shown in Obsolete Dream, Kurotsuno is a student. However, she - alongside Hanten and Met - only occasionally attends school since attendance is voluntary in Ne-no-Kuni. [8] She attends when she has free time. [9]

Relationships[]

Relatives[]

Sullivan[]

Sullivan is Kurotsuno's father, and she is particularly hostile towards him. He, instead of calling her by her current name, calls her by her past name "Olivia," something that triggers a strong negative reaction from her and usually leads to violent actions toward him. He also refers to her as "kimi," which in Japanese is a very informal and familiar way of saying "you." [10] When Kurotsuno was younger however, they got along well.

294

Sullivan and Olivia used to have a happy relationship.

Sullivan does not understand why Kurotsuno acts the way she does towards him. It is unclear whether he is aware that she does not want to be called by her former name. He worries about their relationship and ceaselessly tries to patch it, but to no avail. Much to Kurotsuno's dismay he also coddles her, being concerned about her daily consumption of chocolate and sweets. [4]

Kurotsuno's resentment for her father seems to be traceable to their relationship when she still went by the name Olivia. During a livestream, Deep-Sea Prisoner stated that when Kurotsuno was a human, she did not have a good family relationship. [7] Sullivan became quite overprotective and strict with her, especially regarding outings outside of the house. [7] So after becoming a demon, Kurotsuno's frustrations pent up all at once and she ended up resenting her father. [7]

There have been indications their relationship is not fully unamendable. For one, Kurotsuno calls Sullivan "dad" or "papa", which indicates she still acknowledges him as her father. Furthermore, in Obsolete Dream chapter 5, Kurotsuno's best friend Hanten tells Sullivan "...if you keep hesitating, [Kurotsuno] really IS going to hate you", implying Kurotsuno does not truly despise her father. When Kurotsuno went to visit Sullivan in chapter 7, Hanten also commented, "Going to visit him despite everything... You never change, eh?"

Obsolete Dream Cast[]

Hanten[]

Hanten is Kurotsuno's best friend and housemate. Hanten specifically calls her by her name without any honorifics. [3] Kurotsuno tolerates Hanten, but at times also expresses sharp disapproval and what she finds to be sleazy behavior. Hanten in turn likes to tease Kurotsuno. Hanten has also been shown to look after Kurotsuno, being by her side when she woke up from a nightmare, or storming into the bathroom when Anten was bothering Kurotsuno.

Hankurooo

Hanten tends to get on Kurotsuno's nerves.

The two have known each other for a long time. Hanten is the only person who Kurotsuno addresses with "anata" (あなた) (which in Japanese is a somewhat rude way of saying "you" also implying a lot of familiarity with the other person). Hanten expresses similar sentiments by making comments such as "you never change" to Kurotsuno.

Illustrations by Deep-Sea Prisoner indicate Hanten and Olivia, Kurotsuno's past self, used to be closer than Hanten and Kurotsuno are in the present day. Olivia and Hanten are depicted holding hands, and in one artwork Hanten is shown taking Olivia flying in her arms. In the present, however, Kurotsuno shoves Hanten away whenever she initiates physical contact (e.g. grabbing her shoulder or holding her hand); what caused this shift has yet to be revealed.

Sometime before 2018, Deep-Sea Prisoner made a sketch of Hanten and Kurotsuno in wedding attire. Later in 2021, she accepted a commission request asking for another wedding artwork between Hanten and Kurotsuno. While Deep-Sea Prisoner's commissions can contain non-canon or hypothetical scenarios, she has said that she does not accept commissions requests if what is depicted in them is impossible to happen within canon. [11]

Met[]

Met is a friend and housemate of Kurotsuno. She gets on Kurotsuno's nerves most of the time and thus endures gruesome violence by her, which Kurotsuno uses as means to an end. Kurotsuno also does not have any qualms in trading off Met for a hundred years as someone else's servant, as shown in chapter 4. Regardless, Met does not seem to hold it against her. She calls Kurotsuno by the overly familiar nickname "Kuro-tsun'." [12]

Reina[]

Reina is a friend and housemate of Kurotsuno. In contrast to her other housemates, Kurotsuno seems the least annoyed with her. They once briefly talked about dealing with negative memories, something Kurotsuno did not run away from. This is notable because the latter usually avoids talking about such topics with anyone.

Bis[]

Bis is a friend and housemate of Kurotsuno. In chapter 1 of Obsolete Dream, Kurotsuno impaled Met and Bis in order to break up a fight between them. But unlike with Met, Kurotsuno does not make a habit out of being violent with Bis.

In chapter 5 of Obsolete Dream, Bis displays curiosity about Kurotsuno's odd behavior around the full moon, but decides against approaching Kurotsuno about it when Met strongly advises her not to.

Maekami[]

Kurotsuno is a customer at Maekami's bar. They seem to be on relatively friendly terms. Maekami occasionally inquires Kurotsuno of her relationship with her father, telling her how much Sullivan misses her, and asking if she feels sorry for her father. Kurotsuno does not like it when he asks about her father, but she does not get violent with him.

Shikabone[]

Shikabone is a friend of Kurotsuno. She seems to understand his situation and has been seen consoling him despite denying the action. Shikabone refers to her as "Kurotsuno-chan," and she calls him "Shikabone-kun." [3]

Jork[]

Jork is Kurotsuno's admirer. Her reaction toward his affections, or whether she even knows about them, is currently unknown.

Glasses[]

Glasses is an acquaintance of Kurotsuno. In Obsolete Dream chapter 4, Glasses asks Kurotsuno about the whereabouts of his boss Sullivan. Later in chapter 7, Glasses calls Kurotsuno to inform her that her father had fainted. Overall, they seem to be on good terms with one another.

Chlomaki[]

Chlomaki is an acquaintance of Kurotsuno. She once offered to give Kurotsuno a bag of OCHO chocolate if she helped her find a white crow with a magic stone. Kurotsuno in turn was annoyed by this.

Abilities[]

Skillset[]

  • Knife-Throwing - Kurotsuno is shown to be an avid knife-thrower throughout Obsolete Dream.
  • Photography - She owns a camera and is shown photographing in chapter 6 of Obsolete Dream.
  • Slingshotting - She owns a slingshot, which she uses in both chapter 3 and 4 of Obsolete Dream.

Natural Abilities[]

  • Nigh-Absolute Immortality - Being a demon, Kurotsuno cannot die from natural causes such as aging or disease. [13] [14]
  • Regenerative Healing Factor - Being a demon, she is able to regenerate body parts, even guts and bones. [15]
  • Ambidexterity - She is naturally ambidextrous. [16]
  • Wing Manifestation - She is able to materialize crow wings. Her father can fully turn into a crow; it is unknown if she possesses this ability as well.
  • Nail Length control - She is able to make her nails grow and shrink at will, as shown in chapter 3 of Obsolete Dream.
  • Trident Manifestation - She is able to materialize a trident, as shown in chapter 3 of Obsolete Dream.
  • Blood Summoning - As shown in an illustration, she is able to summon an unknown type of creature with her blood.

Trivia[]

  • "Kurotsuno" means "black horn" in Japanese. [17]
  • Her human name "Olivia" means "olive." [17]
  • She was one of Deep-Sea Prisoner's first original characters. [18]
  • Previously on Deep-Sea Prisoner's character page, clicking on Kurotsuno's full portrait would load Olivia's.

    The bird-like pattern

  • The bird-like pattern found on Kurotsuno's horn, Kurotsuno's trident, the cover of Obsolete Dream, and in numerous other artworks featuring Kurotsuno, coincides with the pattern found on the spell Kcalb used near the end of The Gray Garden.
  • In a mini-comic Kurotsuno is shown having difficulty using an umbrella due to her tall horns. She then comments "kusotsuno" (translates to "shitty horns"), which is actually a pun on her own name.
  • She is one of the few demons in Deep-Sea Prisoner's works with human-like skin. Her father Sullivan also shares this trait.
  • From 28 June to 3 August, 2017, Deep-Sea Prisoner hosted a popularity poll that let people vote on their three most favorite characters of hers. When the results came out on 7 September, 2017, Kurotsuno was ranked 20th. [19]
