Etihw (エティーウ) is a major character in The Gray Garden. They are the god of the Gray Garden, with Kcalb being their devil counterpart/partner. In the past, Etihw fought in the Great War.
Physical Description[]
Etihw has black eyes with black pupils, raceless white skin, short neck-length black hair, gray fingernails, and a "crown" of white diamonds. Their attire is monotone with shades of white and gray, as well as decorated with geometric diamond shapes. They wear a long monotone dress with long sleeves, and a white cape with a diamond-shaped cutout that extends past their dress in length. Overall, their appearance is quite feminine. Five white diamonds float around them. The color of their underwear is "a secret," [2] according to Deep-Sea Prisoner. They are said to be flat-chested. [3]
In the past, Etihw's appearance was slightly different. Their hair was much longer, extending all the way down to their feet. Their clothing had more detailed diamond patterning, and their diamonds had a pointier and thinner shape. The white hues of their clothing were also more varied. Past Etihw walked rather than floating, causing their long robe and dress to bunch up at the bottoms of their feet. Compared to the softer expression they hold in present day, Etihw bore a more severe, cold, and lifeless expression in the past.
Personality[]
Etihw normally has a very flirty "que sera sera" attitude; they are a bit lazy and prefer lounging around over acting formally. According to an angel NPC in the village, they enjoy napping. [4] Etihw's favorite hobby is teasing Kcalb. [4] They had a somewhat sheltered upbringing; compared to other gods, they are more innocent and naïve on subjects like brutality and other-world negativity. They lack knowledge on many topics, and because of this, Etihw is overwhelmed when dealing with new and uncomfortable situations such as being held in captivity and tortured to the degree where they cry. Despite their usually casual attitude, Etihw is able to behave mature and serious when the situation calls for it, as is evident when Ivlis and his underlings invade the Gray Garden and threaten the peace.
In the past, Etihw used to be much colder [5] but has changed since then; the only time they revealed remnants of their past side was when Ivlis threatened Kcalb's life. It has been stated in terms of physical strength, Etihw was pretty strong back during their more "extreme period" during the war. [2]
Background[]
Etihw is the youngest known god, [6] though they are older than Kcalb. [4] Etihw sealed Kcalb underground because they could not understand each other at the time, the essence of conflict itself. [7] He was sealed for eons, until he broke free, beginning a war against the angels and their god.
During the Great War, Etihw was one of the central catalysts, being the leader of the angels. Fighting against Kcalb, they slaughtered many demons, and in turn, he slaughtered many angels. When the war ended, Etihw was left with only two of their closest subordinates alive. In memory of the ones who died during the war, Etihw "reincarnated" some of the fallen warriors as young angels.

Relationships[]
Relatives[]
Kcalb[]
Kcalb is Etihw's devil counterpart and husband. Etihw often teases him over any number of subjects, frequently bests him at games such as Othello, and often bickers with him. A favorite topic of Etihw's is teasing Kcalb about his age even though they are older than him.
Despite their frequent bantering, the two get along very well and deeply care for each other, enough so that other similarly powerful figures, like Reficul, mention the idiosyncrasy of their relationship in comparison to other gods and devils. The two share a very close bond with one another, close to the degree that Kcalb has a near-phantom "sense" over the well-being of Etihw. Though Etihw is older than him, they depend on him for knowledge on topics such as other-world cruelty and brutality.
Observed through some artworks and The Gray Garden, Kcalb and Etihw are in a romantic relationship. To a question asked by a fan regarding whether or not Kcalb and Etihw were "married or dating," Deep-Sea Prisoner responded with "YEP(^◡^)." [8] According to an angel NPC in the village, Etihw and Kcalb are always napping. [4] In a Lighthouse Mail, Deep-Sea Prisoner also stated if Etihw had died in Kcalb's place he would "follow them into death." [9]
In the past, they were great enemies, with Etihw sealing Kcalb underground for eons for unknown reasons. The two fought in the Great War after Kcalb broke free from his prison, each slaughtering the other's subordinates.
Wodahs[]
Wodahs is Etihw's headangel and subordinate. He has served Etihw since before the Great War. Wodahs holds mutual respect for Etihw and reports directly to them (and to an extent, Kcalb). He is the one who reprimands Etihw and Kcalb when they argue or bring up the Great War.
During the Great War, it was Wodahs who convinced Etihw to change their ways, thereby ending the war.
When asked if Wodahs was created by Etihw, Deep-Sea Prisoner responded, "I can say yes and no." She said that he was not exactly created by Etihw; that it is partially the case, but not exactly. [10] When asked again if he was an angel made by Etihw, Deep-Sea Prisoner responded, "You could say that, but you could also say that isn't the case." [11]
Silhouette[]
Silhouette is the daughter of Etihw and Kcalb. They are on good terms. She is said to be similar to Etihw. They are both quiet, reserved and very close to each other. [12]
The Gray Garden Cast[]
Ivlis[]
Ivlis and Etihw are enemies having met through the events of The Gray Garden. While Etihw talked with Chelan and Dialo on the beach, Ivlis intercepted them, sealing Etihw away in a special flame prison rendering many of their abilities unusable. Etihw later manages to break free right in time to confront Ivlis. The two are on bad terms as of Ivlis' failed invasion. Etihw has deep hatred toward Ivlis for hurting Kcalb and their world's denizens.
In the ATTACK! Devil-ish Style comics, Etihw witnessed some of Ivlis' torment at the hands of Satanick. They appeared surprised by the treatment, though their personal thoughts on the matter remain uncertain.
Reficul[]
Reficul was a "passing demon" that aided in the force against Ivlis' invasion, though Etihw never met her personally until after the invasion; the two formally meet after Ivlis' invasion but communicated beforehand via Etihw's diamonds. Etihw and Reficul are acquaintances and on good terms because of the help Reficul gave to stop Ivlis' invasion.
Alela Grora[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
Etihw is Grora's boss and god. Grora was one of Etihw's subordinates during the war and fought on their side. Deep-Sea Prisoner stated that the two are "probably close" to each other. [13]
Macarona & Rawberry[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
Macarona and Rawberry are inhabitants of Etihw's world. They are on good terms with Etihw.
Yosafire[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
Yosafire is an inhabitant of Etihw's world. They are on good terms, though Yosafire does not visit Etihw often. Yosafire thinks of Etihw as a very nice and cute person. After Yosafire was attacked by a flame bat, she and Froze went to Blancblack Castle, where Etihw healed her injuries. Yosafire views Etihw in a positive light.
Froze[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
Froze is an inhabitant of Etihw's world. They are on good terms. Moreso compared to the other villagers, Etihw trusted Froze enough to task her with investigating three forests in The Gray Garden.
Chelan & Dialo[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
Chelan and Dialo are inhabitants of Etihw's world. They are on good terms as seen during the talk near the beach and time they contacted each other via diamonds scattered across the Gray Garden.
Raspbel Preserves[]
Raspbel is an inhabitant of Etihw's world. It is said Etihw is aware of Raspbel's insanity. [13] Despite this, it is implied they are on good terms.
"Fate"[]
- This section is incomplete. You can help improve this article by expanding it.
The exact relationship Fate and Etihw share is unknown, but it appears Fate holds an unfavorable view of Etihw.
Various[]
Satanick[]
Satanick is an acquaintance of Etihw. They meet after the events of The Gray Garden but have no significant relationship. [13] Satanick finds Etihw cute much to Kcalb's chagrin. Etihw is one of the ways Satanick provokes Kcalb, usually by speaking about Etihw in a lewd manner. Although Satanick finds Etihw to be cute, he has said he would not "NTR" (short for the Japanese word netorare meaning "to steal one's loved one") her away from Kcalb. However, he has also said he would not mind having a threesome with them and Kcalb. Despite his vulgarity, Satanick speaks formally and politely with Etihw. [14]
Ciel, Rigatona, & Sherbet[]
Ciel, Rigatona, and Sherbet were all Etihw's loyal subordinates during the Great War.
Siralos[]
Siralos is an acquaintance of Etihw's. Siralos ensures he is polite to his fellow god, even going as far as to kiss Etihw's hand upon first meeting them. Etihw in turn seems rather surprised at Siralos' behavior, being unsure of how to react to him.
Abilities[]
Natural Abilities[]
- Nigh-Absolute Immortality - Being a god, Etihw cannot die from natural causes such as aging or disease. [15]
- Creation - They created the Gray Garden and its inhabitants, even "recreating" their deceased subordinates into young angels.
- Floating - Etihw moves around by floating for the most part as shown in The Gray Garden and multiple artworks.
- Barrier Creation - Etihw's stones serve as a barrier to protect the Gray Garden from outsiders.
- Signal Creation - The power from their stones allows their world to have cellphone signals and Wi-Fi.
- Teleportation - They are able to teleport freely anywhere in their world, as shown when they appeared before Yosafire and her party in the Haunted Forest.
- Warp Creation - They can create warps that allow users to warp between different warps.
- Sealing - In the past before the war, they sealed Kcalb underground and deep in the earth.
- Non-Corporeal Form - Even without a physical form, their voice could be heard responding to Rieta out of thin air ("You rang?") before finally appearing.
- Healing Magic - They instantly healed Yosafire after being attacked by a flaming bat in the garden and offered to do the same on Kcalb near the end of the game, although he refused it.
- Weather Control - They can create rain. [16]
Battle Statistics[]
Trivia[]
- "Etihw" is "white" spelled backwards.
- Etihw is a bokkuko, a woman who speaks with the more masculine Japanese personal pronoun "boku." Their gender was previously mistranslated in a way thought to make them non-binary. This is due to the word "中性的" which has been used by Deep-Sea Prisoner to describe Etihw, meaning androgynous presenting, while agender (or a close comparison in the Japanese LGBT+ community) would be "Xジェンダー." [1]
- During the Great War, Etihw stood on their legs instead of levitating.
- The tree with a sword struck within in the Beginning Forest is meant to be a reflection of something Etihw still thinks about. [13]
- Deep-Sea Prisoner has made a homage to the painting The Embrace by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt featuring Etihw and Kcalb.
- Various GIF banners of Etihw at a beach used to be displayed on Deep-Sea Prisoner's Sunahama Log page. The banner would change depending on the user's machine local time.
- From 28 June to 3 August, 2017, Deep-Sea Prisoner hosted a popularity poll that let people vote on their three most favorite characters of hers. When the results came out on 7 September, 2017, Etihw was ranked 6th. [17]
- Deep-Sea Prisoner imagines Yū Kobayashi as Etihw's voice actress. [10]
- Etineko's paw pads are pink. [18]
