Animals are a type of species in Deep-Sea Prisoner's works. There are currently 111 named animal characters.

Physical Characteristics[]

All animals have an animal form. Most of them also have a humanoid form they can switch to at will. They have two sets of ears in this form as well. The humanoid ears are typically round. However, if an animal has distant demon blood, these ears will be pointy instead as can be seen with Cherryblod. Aside from a few exceptions, many animals in Ne-no-Kuni have pointed ears. [2] Deep-Sea Prisoner likes animal characters to also have human ears. Hence, a character like Shirogane can be described as having four ears. [3]

Animals with a humanoid form can also change individual body parts back and forth between being more animal-like or human-like, such as their hands. For example, Fungas Crocodile has been shown switching his hands to claws in a mini-comic. Chlomaki can sometimes also be seen with cat-like paws. Birds have their arms as wings, such as Kigisu. [4]

Biology[]

Behavior[]

Animals generally behave like other sentient characters in Deep-Sea Prisoner's works. However, they sometimes also display behaviors of the animals they are. For instance, Chlomaki has cat-like instincts and sometimes pounces on small creatures. Tsumuri can create a cocoon and has been shown hibernating in an artwork. According to Deep-Sea Prisoner, animals inherit their habits and characteristics based on their motifs. [5]

Goats classified as demons will not make noise. [6] Conversely, goats classified as animals will make goat noises. [6] Octopuses have the ability to mimic and turn their hair into tentacles. [5]

Unlike full-blood demons, animals with some demon blood in their veins (such as Idate, Lobco, and Cherryblod) are not very interested in angel flesh and blood. However, if they had the chance to eat it, they would enjoy the taste. [6] Most animals are often mixed with demon blood. [7] Whether or not animals can talk depends on the world they live in. In Ne-no-Kuni, animals are capable of talking. [8] Many birds sing better than average, though there are a few that are not so good. [9]

Creation and Reproduction[]

Biologically most animals will mate in the common way their species dictate. For example, Lobco can lay eggs, [10] which can be seen in a few illustrations. However, many humanoid animals are capable of reproduction in the natural way humans mate. Some animals who are dexterous with magic can genderbend, [10] thus making it possible for same-sex couples to copulate. Male animals that are mixed with demons are capable of giving birth. [7]

Same-Species Animal Reproduction[]

Same-species reproduction is most common amongst animals. When there is same-species reproduction, the infant result will be the exact species as both of its parents.

Hybrids[]

  • Animal/Angel Hybrids: There are currently no known animal/angel hybrids. This is due to the fact that angels are avoided and feared more than demons. [11]
  • Animal/Demon Hybrids: Most animals are often mixed with demon blood. [7] Some animals such as Cherryblod, Idate, and Lobco possess demon blood in their veins.

Social Behavior[]

Cultural Views[]

Gender and Sexuality[]

The idea of gender amongst animals is more hard-set than amongst demons. [12] There are some animals that care a lot about their gender or are very insistent on being heterosexual. [12] However, there are also exceptions to this, such as Killkill. [12] Deep-Sea Prisoner has said that perhaps due to him being a jellyfish, Killkill does not care much about gender and fans are free to interpret his identity how they like. [12]
